Ragga Twins, Jumpin’ Jack Frost, DJ Phantasy, Bryan Gee, Dillinja, Micky Finn, Ray Keith and MC GQ are just some of the legendary pioneering figures to share their insights and experiences in The Rest Is History – an exciting new documentary that tells the story of jungle drum & bass music’s roots and how it became such phenomenon and boundary-breaking cultural movement.

The most detailed and extensive documentary to focus on the culture’s roots and foundations to date, The Rest Is History is written and directed by Peter Costigan, a UK/Canadian artist and film maker who’s had a background in film and TV since his childhood when he starred in the Robocop TV series.

Switching from screen to sonics during his 20s, Toronto Film School graduate Peter operated as a D&B artist Stickbubbly for many years, then returned to his first love in 2015 to make this documentary.

“Myself and Eric (my co-producer) were both young ravers sneaking out of our windows at night to go see our favourite DJs,” explains Peter who grew up in Toronto, arguably one of the first international cities outside of the UK to truly embrace, boost and contribute to jungle and drum & bass culture.

“I set out to create a feature-length documentary to educate people about the origins of jungle/drum & bass,” Peter continues. “When we started the project there wasn’t much information out there about the subject. Since I had a background in film and television and a passion for the music I thought I would give it a shot.”

Shots fired, target hit, The Rest Is History has already been warmly received by the scene over the last few years. Lucky fans and industry insiders enjoyed screenings just before the pandemic struck and put the documentary launch and promotion on pause. More recently Peter has taken The Rest Is History on the road across the UK and Ireland, hosting Q&A sessions at some of the screenings. Currently mid-tour, August 27 sees the documentary launching in Dublin Sugar Club, while on August 28 and 31 it will be screened at London ICA (but with no Q&A sessions)

For full details on tickets and access to stream and watch the documentary online (£7 to rent, £10.95 to buy), visit the Doc N Roll site – a much-needed platform for independent music documantaries.

“I’m hoping that the people that don’t know about the music learn where it came from and perhaps even become new junglists,” says Peter. Get to know. Watch the trailer below…
