Year after year, Song & Surf, the winter festival gem of the Canadian West Coast never ceases to deliver good times and good music when they are needed most. Winter gets dreary, dark, wet and not overly invigorating – Song & Surf remedies that. Listening to local favorites and a few international artists in cozy venues like the Lodge and Church during the day is a welcomed change to weekends spent huddling indoors. Catch a bonfire on the beach or visit your friends in their cabins, cook good food, drink good beer – it’s the perfect staycation.
We rang in year #11 in our best outfits: Disco Fever Friday, Wedding Day Saturday and Psychedelic Sunday – without the curious glances you’d normally be accustom to…because guess what? Everyone else looks as fabulous as you. We drank local wine on the beach, slipped and slided on the icy roads to-and-from our cabin, danced in the moonlight and laughed. A lot of laughs.
Murge’s Vinyl Voyage was once again a highlight – that man’s discography is seriously impressive. Foxglove’s performance in the church made us tear up. Those women’s voices and songwriting is profoundly beautiful. We high-kicked to Astrocolor, got sweaty to Bousada and Neighbour and danced the days and nights away to so many more.
If you have the chance, Song & Surf is an event that has sparked a community of people to come back year after year. It’s a profound event that is as much about the music as spending time with the people who attend.
