A common mistake made by newbie designers/sewers is to assume that any garment pattern can be made in any fabric, whether it be a woven or knit. As an instructor at FIT for 12 years, I encountered many students thinking that it could work, only to try it and fail. The frustration of learning the results of a pattern you drafted for a woven fabric, but cut in a knit, is not only disappointing but the garment is unwearable,.

This is why, when I started UoF in 2008, I made it a priority to create an entire series on working with cut & sew knits, beginning with our lessons, Introduction to Knit Fabrics and Knit Fabric Principles. These lessons cover all you need to know about knit fabric structure, the science of stretch ratio, how to draft a set of knit slopers from measurements and how to draft a series of knit garments, using these slopers.
