[Event Review] Goldrush 2023 Lit Up The Sonoran Skies

Goldrush is the staple festival for Arizona’s largest electronic event producer Relentless Beats. Each year the festival showcases the biggest lineups and production to bring a top-of-the-line experience for festival goers in the state and beyond. The 2023 version of the festival, Sonoran Skies, was no different. The music was awesome, the crowd was great, and production was fantastic per usual for Relentless Beats.

First things first when diving back into the festival is the music. Each artist really brought their A-game down to the Arizona desert. My favorite sets during the weekend were AMÉMÉ, Ben Böhmer, Tiësto, Zhu, and Lady Faith. Each artist brought their own unique sound and diversity to the festival. AMÉMÉ threw down an eclectic set of tribal house which had the crowd getting down non-stop for his entire set. Ben Böhmer transported the crowd through a deep and melodic journey that only he can do. Tiësto mixed in his old school sound with the new school for a nice trip of nostalgia. It was my first time seeing the legend in around a decade and his set was as fun as I remembered. Zhu showcased his latest version of his live show featuring music from all of his eras. Lady Faith was a much-needed switch up from the sounds that we usually get with her hardstyle sound which we never get here out in Arizona so it was a lot of fun to get something new! Overall, each artist I saw threw down without a disappointing set all weekend.

When looking at the stage production, each stage was unique enough to standout from each other and not feel like you were seeing the same thing each stage you went to. The main stage, Paradise Prairie, didn’t hold back with it’s lighting and LEDs. The Moonrise Mountain stage, home to the bass acts, was more intimate but with monstrous sound that had the headbangers getting off the entire weekend. The most unique stage was the Coyote Cove which hosted the house and techno acts inside a warehouse which was apt for the artists playing there and made it feel like a proper rave. The bass was bumping and the crowd here was also intimate and always friendly with each other. It was easy to get lost in the music in there and not know where time went.

The festival also had a slew of amenities when you needed some downtime from the music such as a roller rink, games such as cornhole, lots of booths and vendors to shop at, arcade games, and more. The festival really looked to cater to the crowd and give them something to do outside of just stand at a stage all night which was great. There were also plenty of food and drink options with quick wait times all weekend. Overall, the amenities were great and much needed!

Overall, the festival definitely saw an improvement over last year’s version which was it’s first year at the Phoenix Raceway. Relentless Beats certainly worked out all the kinks with things being bigger and better all around this year. If you are looking for a west coast fall festival, Goldrush is certainly one that I can recommend. If you couldn’t make it this year, we hope to see you there in 2024!
