With 2023 just around the corner, we wanted to reflect on the highlights of 2022. This time, we invited Avi Sic to tell us more about what this year meant to her, what she learned, achieved and what are her plans for the holidays.
Hi, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. 2022 is almost over, we want to know what is your most important highlight of the year, both musically and personally?
Thanks for having me.
Musically, a highlight of 2022 was clocking in at 300 live gigs this year. A personal highlight of mine was exploring Iceland with my partner for a few weeks. Definitely a cool place to visit.
What was your favorite release of 2022 (of your own)?
‘Best of Me’ the remix package.
And what was your favorite track of the year from someone else?
Dom Dolla – ‘Miracle Maker’
Did you have any special standout shows this year either that you played or attended?
I played a sold out direct support show for Joel Corry after DJing a main stage show at PITP festival that same afternoon. It was a great day!
What was the biggest lesson you learned in life in 2022?
Success rarely happens overnight – it can be a long process. So just staying patient with myself, appreciating all the smaller achievements, and staying focused working towards my larger goals…
And following on, what was the biggest lesson you learned in music?
Again it’s probably patience. Shopping new music around to labels can be a process. Saying yes to something just because they respond doesn’t necessarily make it the right deal. In general, the biggest lesson learned is that things take time.
If you could send yourself a message to you 5 years ago, what would it be and why?
I would say to get familiar with the business side of the music industry.
How has your sound developed in 2022?
It’s come a long way. I’m always learning new techniques and also what sounds and genres I’m best at creating and focusing on those. Lately, I’m making stuff in the Bass House, Tech House, and Electro House genres.
Who would you say was the most innovative artist in 2022?
Really enjoyed the Anti Up project from Chris Lake and Chris Lorenzo. Those guys kill it together.
Which label or labels do you think were at the top of their game in 2022?
I’m a big fan of Bijou’s Do Not Duplicate – they put out some really good tracks this year. Also big into Tchami’s Confession label.
If Any, do you have any regrets for the year behind us?
My only regret is not releasing more music. It’s sometimes hard to find a balance between playing so many live shows and doing releases. But it’s something I’m definitely on top of now.
What are your plans for the holidays?
Taking a few days off to spend with family.
Just for fun, if you had to take a classic Christmas song and remix it, what style would it be and what could we expect?
‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’. Probably a Tech House edit with a Bass House drop. Focus on the word Rockin’ and build on that.
Where will you be spending New Year’s Eve?
I’ll be playing a show at the Moxy Hotel in Chicago, USA.
If you had to put 2022 into one sentence, what would it be?
Amazing year but ready for what’s to come in 2023!
