A new survey of over 1,000 students has found that almost 50% of students with high GPAs listen to EDM while studying.
The study surveyed students ages 18 to 23 about their study playlists, habits, and GPAs and used Spotify‘s API to analyze 48,077 songs in study playlists.
And while pop was the #1 genre for studying with lo-fi closely behind, a good 46% of students with a 3.5-4.0 GPA preferred EDM when it came time to hit the books.
Interestingly, male students were 166% more likely than female students to listen to EDM while studying.
The top artists for studying were Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and SZA with male students enjoying rappers 21 Savage and Kendrick Lamar as well.
But research has found that lyrics can interfere with cognitive tasks, potentially accounting for those with high GPAs preferring classical or instrumental music.
The top electronic artists for studying were ODESZA, Aphex Twin, and DROELOE with slower beats and fewer lyrics prominent in many of their tracks.
But Spotify does create their own study playlists by genre, putting plenty of research into maximum academic efficiency, and even lowering the loudness on their collections to help students focus.
