Excision and his team have done it again; another successful Bass Canyon is in the books. Bass heads united for a weekend full of headbanging and rail breaking.
When the gates opened, fans felt the bass pulsating through them. Alongside Bass Canyon, Excision also hosts two other dubstep-focused festivals: The now legendary Lost Lands and his newest project, the resort festival in Mexico called Paradise Blue.
Here is what we thought of Bass Canyon 2022!
Vibes: A
Not only is Bass Canyon solely a bass festival, but camping was also the primary sleeping arrangement. Those who attended genuinely wanted to be there. It is easy to be intimidated by videos of dubstep crowds. However, underneath the intense bass faces and rail shaking, headbangers are some of the most genuine people.
Within the headbanging community, there is a sense of responsibility to care for one another. In the midst of mosh pits, if an individual fell, those in the crowds quickly got them back on their feet, ensured they were okay, and returned to raging. The headbanger helpers also excited the crowd throughout the weekend.
The general admission campgrounds also provided camaraderie throughout the weekend. After the show, while walking back, bass music was blasting. Even though everyone was tired, the smiles that came from the conversation made the three-mile walk enjoyable.
Production: A
Anyone who has ever been to an Excision show knows how incredible his visuals are. This weekend was no exception! The pyrotechnics alongside the laser shows had the audience transfixed during the entirety of the weekend.
4D laser shows are becoming increasingly popular amongst DJs. So once the sun set, the DJs were not shy in incorporating 4D laser shows with their sets. It was a mesmerizing experience, watching lasers slice through the crowd. It almost felt as though it was just you and lasers.
While watching the various visuals, vibrancy radiated throughout the crowd. They accurately represented the individual while captivating the audience. A sense of comfort, as well as self-realization, was presented during sets. The visuals had the same hypnotizing hold, no matter where we were in the crowd.
Another extraordinary component at this year’s Bass Canyon was The 360 Dome, a great escape from reality. Fans had to wait quite some time to enter The 360 Dome, and there were instances of people walking through the backside. On the outside, we did not expect The 360 Dome to be much. But immediately, once the show started, we went on a journey through time.
The dome provided an intimate setting. It was very calming to be there. Upon leaving the dome, a sense of rejuvenation washed over us. During a headbanging festival, there need to be moments of clarity like this.
Music: B+
Bass Canyon is a dream come true for dubstep DJs. This year’s headliners rocked Canyon Stage. Zomboy, Jessica Audiffred, Svdden Death, and many more did their jobs of ensuring necks breaking. The lineup was solid. Fans had the opportunity to see their favorite DJs. However, for bass shows, lineups have become repetitive.
Everyone who took the stage performed passionately, giving the fans exactly what they needed. Within dubstep, there is a variety of subgenres. Bass Canyon did a phenomenal job fusing different subgenres.
There was no shortage of bass. Being in the crowd, bass vibrated with pounding hearts. The intensity of the bass was the perfect setup for breaking rails. Headbangers were told to release the rail at various points, as not to break them down.
Bass is necessary for bass-focused shows. Unfortunately, the speakers overpowered a few sets, which is why music gets a B+.
Venue: B+
Every August, Bass Canyon returns to The Gorge in Washington. The Gorge is stunning, overlooking the Columbia River. Optimal views are seen throughout the open amphitheater.
Sunsets, lasers, and the rides reflected off the river, creating awe-inspired views. On top of the hill is a row of trees lit up during the night. Everywhere we looked, lights illuminated The Gorge.
Most festivals have actors or other activations for festival-goers participation. However, Bass Canyon just had three stages. Hilltop Stage had a lot of flame machines, adding to the ambiance, and the production value made up for the simplicity that The Gorge offered.
Overall: A
Overall, Bass Canyon was a wonderland for bass heads all around. PLUR was present all three days. The camping component made the weekend much more enjoyable; music played all night. Memories are made under the stars.
There’s nothing like being surrounded by uninterrupted bass music for three days. The music, production, and scenic venue present a once and lifetime experience. Bass Canyon needs to be on any bass head’s bucket list.
We can’t wait to headbang again at The Gorge next summer!
