In 2024 Tape B was a much appreciated presence in the bass music scene. Proved by sold out multiple venues during his summer tour as well as played epic sets at Lost Lands, Wakaan, and several other big-name festivals along the way, this Florida native couldn’t have more momentum going into 2025. We will remember this night in Tampa for the rest of our lives…
Plus throughout the year, Tape B collaborated with the likes of Juicy J, Subtronics, Ganja White Night, and, in the case of this EP’s latest single, VKTM. What more could you ask for? But wait there is more…
In true Tape B style, “Distortion Theory” is an immaculate blend of old school meets new school. Almost as an ode to his previous works, his original “Hallow Tape” EP. You can even catch the same Jack-o-lantern style cassette reappearing in the cover of his most recent drop.
The title track, “Backspin Bass”, perfectly explains the plight of his artistic direction. Samples of the inner workings of cassette tapes and how to operate them ease the listener into the opening track. With unmissable fashion, the opening drop “shows them how it’s done” with discrete samples of the Late Mac Millers ‘Loud’. Next up on the agenda, “Hot One” will have you getting weird to the deep billows and wonky wubs that are so unmistakably Mr F’in Tape B.
Collaborations:
“Nocturnal” with VKTM, will have you bouncing off the rails and banging your head on repeat. Debuting at his Lost Lands set, “Nocturnal” is an elegant blend of headbanger mixed with softer parts and of course the infamous Stewie sample. While his next collaboration with rapper / underground artist PAV4N brings that UK dubstep feel full force.
Then “Back to the Dust “ intertwines harsh accented vocals through deep, over-stretched bass lines and delicate underlays. Lastly, the album Closer, “Someone to Hold,” featuring Dani King, closes out the EP perfectly. Closing out his Lost Lands set with this track, it makes perfect sense to choose as an album ender.
While slightly bummed the collaboration with Ganja White Night didn’t make the cut; this end-of-the-year 8-track EP is packed with nothing but instant bangers, offering everything bass music should be.
The year to come for Tape B
2025 will be a year for focusing on studio time and sound production with less time and attention to touring for Mr. Tape B. Car Tunes Vol. 4 is still slated to release sometime in early January, as in the past. For those who don’t know, Car Tunes is an hour-long Mix Tape B releases at the beginning of each year, giving fans a preview of his upcoming projects.
Whether it’s Flips from his Vibe Check volumes or Drip Tapes playlists, fans like myself look forward to the Car Tunes volumes every year.
