When you watch fashion week runway shows do you ever say to yourself, “I wonder how they made that”? Well, if you watched the recent Monse show you might have wondered how Creative Directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia created some of those fabulous looks. Their lace appliqué looks, their portrait collared jacket and their cut & sew striped knit dresses. We can show you how it’s done!
Lace Seaming

If you have ever wanted to work with lace for one of your design projects, then you absolutely MUST view our lace-sewing series first. For example, you NEVER want to cut into the lace’s motif pattern when joining a lace seam. View our lesson on how to sew a lace overlap seam so that all of your seams look ‘seamlessly’ professional. The lessons are all taught by Medina Charifova, a couture seamstress and instructor at FIT.
Lace Appliqué

Monse paired a sleeveless jacket over a white cotton shirtdress with a lace appliquéd hem. Notice how the lace flower motif is appliquéd onto the dress and how the flower motif is used as the hem? We have two lessons that teach this technique. Choose either a lace appliqué overcast stitch or a lace appliqué blanket stitch (depending upon the lace), learn how to cut the lace and then how to appliqué it onto the fabric.

Portrait Collar Jacket
Monse’s beautifully tailored, cropped portrait collar jacket can serve as inspiration for creating your own version (Image Credit: Vogue.com). Learn how by viewing our lesson Drafting a Portrait Collar Jacket.
Cut & Sew Knits

One of the most important slopers to have in your pattern making sloper library is a knit block. Our lesson, Drafting a Women’s Fitted Stable T-shirt from Measurements is the foundation for creating, not only t-shirts and cut & sew knit tops, but also dresses. Our series on drafting various knit necklines includes Drafting a Collared Neckline for Knits. Monse’s super cute striped cut & sew knit dresses can be accomplished using these lessons. Enjoy!
