The first step is admitting one has a problem, right? As the newest Wubaholics mate the family of wub-addicted producers from all over the country, the California-based producer (real name: Taylor Templeton) is joining the weekly meetings with a menacing experimental track, titled “Brute.” The track sits right between weird bass and trap, with some wave influence even, the producer told CE exclusively.
Templeton’s approach on bass music is focused on contrasting dark and light tropes, which can certainly be felt in the four-and-a-half-minute journey. “Brute” begins with a foreboding lead in, with menacing top lines running over an expansive bass line running beneath. Without a doubt, the listener will locate the sound as some theme song to a horror movie.
Then suddenly, the first drop comes completely out of left-field with moments of gritty experimentation, addicting wub slow downs, even dipping into low tempo moments. With the ability to combine entrancing melodies and dark, heavy bass drops, T-Bird creates a dangerously hypnotic atmosphere within “Brute” before ending right where he began. Slow, subdued and creeping, and wildly addictive, this is where T-Bird’s sound sit at the current moment. Like a drug too, we need more to curb our addiction.
“Writing it felt like a direct reflection of what I was listening to and feeling at the time. I feel like those influences really show themselves out here in a very clear way. Moving forward, I want to keep blending my influences to create these songs that go in all these different stylistic directions, but ultimately come together to forge a new, unique feeling.”
