Here at Conscious Electronic, we love all things bass — breakbeat, downtempo, left-field, experimental, dubstep in all its forms, you name it. As the underground bass movement has begun its full ascendancy in the US, we’ve been keeping a finger on the pulse of up-and-coming bass artists the country over. As such, CE’s Rising Bass Spotlight seeks to shine a light onto the rising producers who’re honing their craft, galvanizing their movements, and attuning eyes, ears, heads, and bodies into all things low end.
For a 22-year old that is still very much fresh on the scene, Lowcation has been capturing the attention of many within the underground bass scene from coast to coast. As the captivating project spearheaded by Connecticut native CJ Martere, the talented newcomer began dialing into his sound around 2020 while he was studying at Icon Collective. Make no mistake, though, Martere is no novice in the studio. Garnering seven years of production experience before even graduating from the esteemed Los Angeles school of music, Lowcation has been charting out his sonic playbook for quite a while now.
Alongside an alumni base that includes Jauz, i_o, Kayzo, NGHTMRE, Slander, and many more, Lowcation has long been hard at work developing a unique sonic fingerprint that is unmistakably his own. It’s a sound that blends organic, synthetic, and original sampling, adding ambiance, energy, and low-end bass to form a journey within his music.
From his 2020 debut EP release in Peak to his contribution on Aspire Higher’s Solstice Sessions Vol. 1, which is where he really set off our radar, and working with Josh Teed on a standout track on Teed’s Gravitas-released tribal EP, which earned Teed himself a Rising Bass Spotlight nod, Lowcation has shown that he knows how to crush mile markers.
As for his newest cohesive release, Territories, Lowcation now comes out of the gate gracefully on the thriving underground imprint, Wormhole Music Group, for a project that is both as gorgeous and immersive as it is off-kilter and experimental.
On the four-track EP, Lowcation crafts a lush and drippy selection of immaculately-crafted tunes that tantalize the senses in all the right ways. The leading track, “Territories,” lays out an ambient landscape that dips down into a subdued low-end with the kind of control one could only expect from a veteran.
The journey then makes its emotive turn to remind listeners to “Feel Again.” Here, Lowcation encourages us to come along as he ventures into vibrant textures, soothing melodies, and tribal chanting. Armed with an expert understanding of breakbeat and off-kilter percussion, the track then gives way to “Fortify” as Martere takes listeners deeper into his signature sound.
Finally, we arrive at the aptly-titled “Source,” which itself becomes a soundboard for something deeper—it’s up to the individual to decide what that is for themselves. By the end of the journey, fans will have a hard time not immersing themselves in this melodic and textural journey through emotionality and sound. Speaking to the EP as the next evolution in his sound, Martere says,
Claiming his rightful spotlight as CE‘s next Rising Bass Artist, Lowcation continues to gain traction as a residual effect of his live performances. Since moving to Denver, he’s played The Black Box, including a Sacred Hive takeover that brought him to Sound Haven last summer. A regular mainstay alongside Josh Teed, SuperFuture, EAZYBAKED, and more, Lowcation is one rising talent who is only just getting started. He even just came off supporting CloZee on tour, and has another upcoming performance opening for Axel Theloff and Josh Teed at Cervantes.
