Meet the women of Electic Forest 2022

There’s no denying that females are sorely underrepresented in the music industry. Within the vast universe EDM, one need only look at the most recent Electric Forest lineup to see that much is true. This is not to fault the curators behind the festival—namely, Madison House and Insomniac—but moreso to point to larger systemic underpinnings over why females aren’t encouraged to go into careers like sound engineering (among myriad other professional fields beyond music). Why females are often socialized from “girlhood” to seek out certain professions over others isn’t intentional or with ill intent, it is however a symptom of deeper seeded cultural conditioning.

That’s why CE is attending the tenth iteration of Electric Forst with the intention of supporting women on the line-up; not as a matter of ethics or allyship, but because these women make up some of the strongest acts on the 2022 billing. Without further ado, and in no particular order, here are our top five most-anticipated sets of the weekend… which, as it turns out, happens to consist of all females!

CloZee

Set time/location: Sherwood Court, Saturday, 11:15 pm – 12:30 am

CloZee Neon Jungle Tour 2021

If what you’re seeking is a feedback loop of adventure, travel, and love then look no further than CloZee’s journey-filled live experiences to transport you to a different place and time. We’ve been one of the strongest supporters of Chloé Herry since her early days when CE actually interviewed the then-green artist/producer at Electric Forest 2018.

From her native of Toulouse, France to her current stomping grounds in Denver, Colorado, CloZee has steadily been making her ascent ever since. She’s reached career milestone after milestone in creating her own music label where she fosters young rising talent to establishing her own curated festival in Voyage, which is making its way to The Caverns this September.

With inspirations far afield from music—a painting, the weather, a dream—in her craft, Chloé Herry’s derivations are difficult to trace. Under the broad structure of electronic and bass music, and informed by sound the world over, Clozee finds her best fit in World Bass’ corner. Without a doubt, CloZee isn’t just one of the most anticipated female acts of the Forest but one of the top artists on the 2022 lineup!

Based in Denver by way of Greenville, South Carolina, Alex Mantekas is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about underground artists in bass music. Her NotLö project has been described as amplifying “inclusion, acceptance, tolerance, and love,” and she is determined to not only shatter the sonic mold but pioneer a new definition of low end sound.

Drawing on her experience as a queer woman in electronic music, Mantekas has received cosigns by EDM heavy hitters from GRiZ to CloZee, and she is the newest artist to emerge with TRUTH’s tastemaking label Deep, Dark, and Dangerous. Emphasizing 140-range bass with distorted grooves, NotLö takes listeners on a dark and ethereal sonic journey – it’s guaranteed that she will continue to expand her influence and impact on her terms.

Speaking to her dream of playing Electric Forest, Mantekas said the following:

It’s been super hard to even process that I’m playing one of the main stages at Electric Forest this Friday. I remember this used to always be a goal festival to attend ever since I started going to them 8 years ago. When I started producing 5 years ago, it obviously became a goal to play immediately as well too. If you would’ve told me that I would accomplish this goal back then, I would have probably laughed at you
😂
SEE YOU SOON E FOREST CREW! See you all on the tripolee stage at 4pm Friday! Happy forest
🖤

Also catch NotLö during Wreckno’s Big Gay Soiree in the Forest too. Check out details here.

A Hundred Drums

Set time/location: The Observatory, Sunday, 5:00 – 6:00 pm

madethecut

Since the inception of A Hundred Drums in 2006, multi-instrumental bass music producer Gabrielle Watson has struck a balance between honoring the origins of modern electronic music and evolving her craft through tantalizing, genre-defiant soundscapes. Flowing through a range of dubstep, reggae, downtempo, and psytrance, A Hundred Drums has captivated audiences with a zest for creativity and appetite for innovation. All she needs are herhand drums to guide the way as her authentic sound is built from the ground up.

Drums are the source and backbone of music. Long before written history, people danced around campfires, creating one collective unit. From this, the name “A Hundred Drums” was born. Selecting the number “one hundred” because of its wholesomeness, A Hundred Drums aligns heartbeats to the BPM. Bringing cultural traditions into the electronic dance scene, A Hundred Drums unifies everyone’s drumming heartbeat to one collective rhythm.

Each human pulse ties the beat to the heart of the dancefloor, and Watson has connected heartbeats around the world through her evocative and seductive live sets. Having performed at a wide variety of notable venues and festivals around the world, A Hundred Drums prides herself on weaving the sounds of nature with the essence of deep bass music to unify all who listen. The next time you’re at one of her sets, remember how you feel. Remember the connection. That’s the moment Gabrielle intends to capture.

TOKiMONSTA

Set time/location: Sherwood Court, Saturday, 7:15 – 8:15 pm

Born and raised in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, TOKiMONSTA (Jennifer Lee) was an unfocused pupil of classical piano. However, she has come to use this background to create vast textural soundscapes through utilizing live instruments, percussion, digital manipulation, and dusty noise. Through her musical creations, she is able to fuse vintage sounds with progressive styles into something unique.

Not only has she caught ears of many as a different dimension of Los Angeles-based music, TOKiMONSTA is notably the first female to join crew/label Brainfeeder, spearheaded by Flying Lotus. In addition, she is also a 2010 Red Bull Music Academy alumni, allowing her to join the ranks of other elite taste makers.

Purporting a public persona of authenticity and vulnerability, Lee’s live performance is engaging as well as intricate. She uses a laptop, along with other pieces of instrumentation and multimedia, to orchestrate a truly interactive experience. TOKiMONSTA is a fearless force on the decks and energetic performer who tours regularly around the world from LA to NY, London to Tel Aviv, Singapore to Tokyo. This makes her an especially anticipated act to catch inside Sherwood.

Khiva

Set time/location: The Observatory, Sunday, 8:45 – 9:45 pm

madethecut

Honoring an artistic longing to convey a passion that arises from somewhere far beneath a visible reality, Nova Scotia-born artist Khiva (Jessie Le Couteur) attempts to bring the deeply rooted to the surface.

Finding her true love within sonic sculpture and nurturing a propensity toward the emotionally fuelled and often dramatic, Khiva’s bass driven 140-centric styles offer a natural focal point, for her musical exports. She crafts intricate low frequency soundscapes and charging beats while fervently utilizing contrasts alongside often haunting and metaphorical lyrical stylings. The aim, she hopes, is to invoke a truly somatic and visceral experience in each listener.

With praised festival appearances, weighty slots alongside some of dubstep’s finest acts, successful headline shows, and various critically acclaimed guest mixes, her intentional selections bring forth a contagious energy through lively and dynamic productions. Khiva uses the decks as a tool to channel the profound, moving, and unexplainable in an experience through sound that goes much deeper than the eye can see. This Deep Dark & Dangerous favorite is an easy choice for any low end fanatic attending Forest.
