This Kickstarter campaign aims to raise funds for music clearances, archive access, legal costs, and a special edition Blu-Ray release of HYPER: THE STEVIE HYPER D STORY—a documentary that celebrates Stevie’s life and legacy as a trailblazer in Jungle and UK music. By backing this project, you’re not just helping to bring the film to life; you’re becoming part of a movement to immortalise Stevie’s impact on the global music scene. And the rewards are next level, with exclusive Stevie Hyper D records, cassettes, clothing, and more up for grabs—only available here and now.
Director Jamie Ross-Hulme, who joined forces with Stevie’s nephew Darrell Austin in 2012, brings a uniquely personal touch to the film. Darrell initially reached out to Jamie after recognising his deep knowledge of London’s music history, and the partnership has since blossomed. As Jamie explains: “This was the first time the family would be opening Stevie’s personal archive to tell his story, and they wanted to do it respectfully and professionally.”
Together, Darrell and Jamie’s collaboration has resulted in a documentary that authentically captures Stevie’s life and contributions to music culture, pulling from unseen footage of 90s London and the underground rave scene. As Jamie notes, the creative process evolved over time: “What started as a tribute to solidify Stevie’s story also became a personal journey for Darrell, as he opened up about his own struggles with grief and mental health.”
The documentary blends unseen archive footage with a narrative-driven, talking heads approach. The cast of contributors is an impressive lineup, featuring legends from London’s music culture who have never before been brought together in this way. Jamie reflects on the film’s vision: “Stevie Hyper D passed away in 1998, just before the digital and social media explosion of the noughties. We wanted to bring to life an artist who had not been widely seen on camera before, existing only via audio recordings from bootleg rave tapes.”
Stevie Hyper D was a lyrical force, with a groundbreaking MC style that set the stage for future generations of artists. His untimely death at 31, just as he was on the brink of mainstream success, was a tragic loss for the jungle scene and beyond. HYPER: THE STEVIE HYPER D STORY honours his memory and cements his place as a pivotal figure in UK music history.
The Kickstarter campaign gives fans and newcomers alike the chance to be a part of this important project, and to help bring Stevie’s story to the world. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grab exclusive merch, and even be among the first to see the documentary. With Stevie Hyper D’s spirit living on in the artists he inspired, this film is set to be a powerful tribute to a true pioneer of British music.
